as to how the animals should act. so he went to st. lawrence bay canada to understand how seals behave in their natural habitat. he recorded the seals' cries so their robotic protege would have over 20 real sounds with which to be programmed. the robotic seal is covered with sensors that enable it to respond to visual, audio and tactile stimuli. shibata developed the touch sensors, placed in 12 spots around the robot, so when a person strokes him, he can determine the direction and speed as well as amount of pressure being applied. >> translator: he learns who movement will encourage its owner to pet it. the owner or others who stroke him, will determine what kind of personality it has and the movements it makes. >> reporter: o . >> reporter: 1,700 robots have been sold. and many hospitals have validated its therapeutic effect. >> translator: hello there. oh, you're so smart. >> reporter: five years ago, this day care center in toyama prefecture started using the robot. they said they felt noticeably better after interacting with the robot. >> translator: everyone's face lights up when

on a five-month journey across the united states and lower canada. i document this tore on a map that i painted for the project and also from previous projects called the road map to lost america. on the map i have taken all of the contemporary borders off the map and replaced them with native territories, and then overlaid it with contemporary highways. i have scheduled venue stops at different areas along the tour, from california to south dakota, that will serve as headquarters for my local research. when i was researching the traveling medicine show, i came across this. they had put out an elixir, and it referred to the elements that came out because of the high stress, high-pressure life, mostly because of the industrial revolution. anyway, i was fascinated by the term american-itis, and i thought it did a lot about the stress-related illnesses, and i was impressed that they picked up on that and the 1800's. i did a survey to see if it was irrelevant element today. i have a series of eight painted banners that are retellings of american history. i am particularly interested in tran

. we are miles off of the western shore of canada's hudson bay, an area very inaccessible. there are no roads, but there are people who live along that shore. an enormous barge is carrying construction materials. it is the only way of getting that equipment there as part of a vital supply line. the conditions were fine, but this journey may not have been possible. as the earth warms up and polar ice melts, shipping lanes are becoming accessible for a longer in the year and for bigger vessels. that could mean the north west -- for longer in the year and for bigger vessels. this means the northwest could become an important shipping route, which could be streamy valuable. -- could be extremely valuable. the military health and exercise in arctic waters, a show of strength, and the government has committed to investing more in ships to patrol the area. other countries' dispute what canada is saying. they say the northwest passage should be free to shipping. there are some disagreements. it has a sense of the gold rush about it. remote areas like this are coming under scrutiny

an impact on its export industry. >>> the japanese government filed a complaint against canada for unfairing subsidizing its solar energy sector. the ontario government is planning to increase their ratio next year. japan said the subsidies are not fair to japanese solar panel makers operating in canada and says they violate wto rules, which ban unfair treatment of imported products. japan says it will ask the organization to establish a committee of experts to resolve the case if agreement through talks is not reached between the two countries. the government says it has taken that case to the wto to prevent the rise of protectionism in environmental-related industries. the solar energy sector is forecast to see substantial growth. the united states and the european union are expected to file complaints. >>> prime minister kan has asked california governor arnold schwarzenegger to invest in japan's bullet train system for the united states' plans transportation system. he said there had been no fatal accidents since it was introduced more than 40 years ago. the prime minister asked the gove

warning. you see the tropical storm warnings through the new england coast and also in to parts of canada. so ocean city not getting it too bad. virginia beach not too bad. one area that got hit last night is kill devil hills, north carolina. phillip jones is down there. how are things now and tell me what sort of damage occurred. >> reporter: right new things are looking better than few hours ago. earl's swirl hear did have an affect. we can show you damage at a shell gas station here. the wind taking the canopy off of the top of the gas station and pushing it in to the building next door. we saw about six hours worth of strong, sustained winds an driving rain that left some roads flood an canopies knocked over. the storm surge got up to the dunes and in some locations flooded some roads. overall, there have been very few reports of serious damage. there is no widespread power outage at any point an no widespread reports of serious damage and we haven't heard anything about any injuries. the mandatory evacuations issued up and down the outer banks have been lifted at noon today. tourists

pressure. strong high pressure extends from areas of canada through the northeast and mid-atlantic. it's one of the reasons earl is heading up the coast opposed to the atlantic. this front f it was a little hurt east we would be in better shape but it will nudge earl away from the coast but it is too close for comfort. there's the thundershowers in storms toledo to indianapolis. maybe delays with that so check with your carrier. earl is a well-defined tropical storm. got stronger yesterday. great environment for it. and you can see earl cranking away in the the atlantic, moving more north than northwest. this is the turn we have been walk talk about. dangerous category four storm. an the forecast brings it up to hatteras tonight. tomorrow morning we are looking at a category three storm. not far off shore from norfolk an the delmarva here. so, this will bring big winds and waves. 50-mile an hour winds potentially for ocean city. martha's vineyard here, by friday night, maybe toward midnight they could be getting hit on the cape and then in to canada over the weekend will be doing bette
